What are Adolescent and Young Adult Issues?

Adolescence and Young Adulthood is the time in the life of a young person when they are transitioning from childhood to adulthood. It is a period of life that is full of biological, emotional, psychological and social changes that one must learn to balance in order to reach “adulthood”. Although everyone comes into their “adult self” in their own unpredictable time, adolescence is thought to occur roughly between the ages of 13-20.

“Growing up” can be quite an experience. Unique for each individual going through the process, but also universally challenging. One moment a child, the next an adolescent – the youngster, with their developing brain, must learn to navigate the biological and psychological pull towards independence and identity formation while practically, socially and emotionally they remain very much dependent.

Yearning to know and assert themselves, find acceptance and validation from their peers and family, while trying to figure out who they really are can lead to relational disruptions. This can often result in the youngster feeling misunderstood, isolated, alone, angry and/or depressed. Experiencing a range of emotions while still needing to manage school, social and family expectations as well as sorting out and solidifying their identity can be extremely overwhelming. How does one develop the skills necessary to traverse this time?

At BHAVA Therapy Group we strive to help adolescents and young adults understand that they don’t have to go through this process alone. Using techniques such as Motivational Interviewing, Cognitive Behavioral Skill Building and Mindfulness Training, we support and promote healthy thinking patterns, teach conflict resolution and emotional regulation skills, increase interpersonal awareness, and provide a safe place to process their realities including peer pressure and family discord. We want to help our teens and young adults gain the insight and awareness they need, along with the necessary tools, to evolve into the adults they strive to be.
